CHAPTER NINE
Tyrant
Steven got his first job at a small hotel downtown as a bellhop. He greeted guests, took their luggage, and escorted them to the reception desk. Steven would often converse about the activities and nightlife in Spring Manor with guests who would ask him. He received a percentage of the fees the customers paid. Instead of appreciating Steven for his hard and smart work, his employer felt he made too much and decided to slash the percentage. Steven, who was not pleased, continued without saying anything until he was accused of stealing money from customers, even though the money were tips given to him by satisfied guests. Steven was finally laid-off because he refused to give his employer the cash or agree to the allegations.
He got another job after a week or so but was fired after two months. Then he got another job at one of the local restaurants as a dishwasher, and somehow, he got fired from that job as well. Steven headed home early after he lost his job, he found himself dreading the drive home. He knew his parents would be upset, possibly to the point that his mom might hit him. This was the third job Steven was fired from in six months. His mom would yell, call him names, swear, and possibly beat him. She had done it before. She had been abusing the family for years, and Steven got the worse of it. The scars, bruises on his arms, and cigarette burns on his back told a story of what he had suffered from at the hands of his mother. When Steven was younger, and someone would ask about his injuries, Steven would make excuses, mostly blaming them on sports. He was over eighteen now, but she mentally controlled him. She knew how to manipulate the men in her life, either verbally or physically.
Steven kept praying that every stoplight would turn red and delay his punishment a little while longer. Steven thought for a moment to leave Spring Manor and not come back, but he had no resources to run away, and if he left, his little brother would probably pay for it. Although what love Nora had left in her heart, she gave to Johnathan. She treated him like a mother should treat a son. Steven was unsure why she was that way with Johnathan and not him. Maybe because he was young and small for his age or perhaps because he looked like her. He was often mistaken for a little girl when he was a baby. But her love for Johnathan could change to bitterness and contempt. Steven had experienced that first-hand, and he couldnât let that happen to Johnathan.
He returned to Turner Street, where his family lived. He walked to the front door and took a deep breath. His heart was racing, preparing himself for what was about to come. His hands shook as he unlocked the door and stepped into the house. Just as he closed the door, he heard the voice come from the living room.
